Kick out the jams mother fuckers … Idag den 30 april är det Valborgsmässoafton. Bland dagens mer kända födelsedagsfirare märks kung Carl XVI Gustav som fyller 75 och MC5-gitarristen Wayne Kramer, som blir 72.

Detroitbandet M(otor) C(ity) 5 var punk långt innan punken existerade. De hängde med White Panther och var polare med Black Panther-rörelsen – de kämpade för samma sak, frihet och mänskliga rättigheter.

Veckans fredagsbit är nog inte med på kungens låtlista*,  utan en låt som ni som brukar ha Dave Ranshall I er närhet lär känna igen introt på …

Låten var en liveinspelning som släpptes på debutplattan Kick out the jams från 1969. Titelspåret blev en hit, men många skivbutiker bojkottade albumet då sångaren Rob Tyner skrek ”Kick out the jams, motherfuckers”, vilket också var tryckt på insidan av konvolutet. Låten censurerades texten ändrades till ”Kick out the jams, brothers and sisters”.  ”

I en intervju från 1970 säger Wayne Kramer: People said ”oh wow, ’Kick out the jams’ means break down restrictions” etc., and it made good copy, but when we wrote it we didn’t have that in mind. We first used the phrase when we were the house band at a ballroom in Detroit, and we played there every week with another band from the area. […] We got in the habit, being the sort of punks we are, of screaming at them to get off the stage, to kick out the jams, meaning stop jamming. We were saying it all the time and it became a sort of esoteric phrase. Now, I think people can get what they like out of it; that’s one of the good things about rock and roll.”
